What Clever Cleaner does well
Clever Cleaner's best feature is its duplicate and similar-photo finder, and it is the main reason to pick it over a swipe-only cleaner. The AI groups near-identical shots and marks a "Best Shot" to keep, which is the fastest way through ten frames of the same sunset. About 170 of the 965 US reviews we read on 2026-09-25 praise the duplicate detection specifically.
Around that core sits a broad toolkit: large video finder with delete or compress, screenshot cleanup, Live Photo to still conversion, compression for photos, screenshots and videos, and a one-tap Smart Cleanup. Reviewers talk about the storage they got back, about 270 of them, including one who wrote "Just cleared 45GB" (5 stars, 2025-03-07).
The app also shows no ads at all; the listing says "No ads, pop-ups, or other distractions". It supports iOS 16.0 and later and comes in 20 languages. For a large, messy library with lots of repeats, this breadth is the reason to install it.
The Swipe mode
Clever Cleaner's Swipe mode is free and unlimited for every user, including new installs after version 3.0. You see one item at a time, swipe left to delete and right to keep, and it covers photos, videos, screenshots and Live Photos. Items are grouped by month, with Recent, Videos, Screenshots, Live and Favorites categories.
Swiped-left items go to an in-app trash where you can review and restore them before you confirm, so a swipe is not an instant delete. There is a basic undo for a deletion and a Skip List for photos you never want to see again.
Two things are not mentioned in the listing: video playback or scrubbing inside Swipe, and a queue for photos you want to decide on later (the Skip List excludes items rather than parking them). A 2025 review also notes that Swipe shows no Live Photo preview. Recent reviewers like the month view: "Love the new upgrade to 'swipe' by month" (5 stars, 2026-09-15).
What changed in Clever Cleaner 3.0
Version 3.0, released on 2026-08-17, is the most important change in Clever Cleaner's history: it ended the fully free era. The timeline, from the App Store version history checked on 2026-09-25:
- 2025-02-27: launch, every tool free.
- 2025-07-05: version 1.10 adds Swipe.
- October 2025: version 2.1 adds video compression.
- 2026-08-17: version 3.0 refreshes the interface, adds photo and screenshot compression, Live Photo removal, new Swipe browsing and Premium.
- 2026-09-14: version 3.4, the current release.
Up to version 2.5, CleverFiles said the app was free to attract early adopters who could keep using it without paying. CleverFiles kept that promise: anyone who installed before 3.0 keeps every feature free. New installs get Swipe unlimited plus a daily allowance on the other tools. CleverFiles does not publish the allowance; reviewers report about 5 GB or about 700 photos a day. The full price breakdown is on is Clever Cleaner free.
Ratings before and after the update
Clever Cleaner's reviews have cooled since 3.0, but it is still one of the best-rated cleaners on the App Store. Of the 965 US reviews we read on 2026-09-25, 828 gave five stars, 78 four, 18 three, 11 two and 30 one. The most recent 500 average 4.63, with 6.6% at one or two stars, against 4.92 in July 2026, before the update.
The complaints cluster around the change. About 17 low-star reviews, all from 2026-08-19 onwards, describe the subscription screen as a surprise after reading that the app was free. About nine say the redesign made the app harder to use, with titles such as "Update Ruined App" (1 star, 2026-09-09), and about ten call it confusing without instructions.
The other recurring complaint is about AI selection. About eight reviews say Smart Cleanup or Best Shot flagged photos that were not duplicates, summed up in one title: "Forces Auto-Delete, Not Safe" (3 stars, 2026-04-12).
Clever Cleaner safety and privacy
Clever Cleaner is built to keep photos on the iPhone, and its deletions are recoverable for 30 days. CleverFiles states on its Clever Cleaner page that "no photos or personal data get uploaded to the cloud". Deleted items go to the iPhone's Recently Deleted album, where Apple keeps them for 30 days before removing them for good (Apple support).
The privacy label is the part to read closely. Checked on the App Store on 2026-09-25, it lists Identifiers under Data Used to Track You, a Device ID linked to you for developer advertising, a User ID for app functionality and product interaction for analytics. Purchase history and crash data are collected but not linked to you.
Safety also depends on how you use it: Smart Cleanup pre-selects items, so review the selection first. For the wider picture, see are photo cleaner apps safe.
Is it legit, and what Reddit says
Clever Cleaner is a legitimate product from an established software company. CleverFiles also makes Disk Drill for Mac, the app has 82,579 US ratings (checked on the App Store on 2026-09-25), and it has shipped regular updates since its launch on 2025-02-27.
What deserves a second look is the coverage. Several roundups that rank Clever Cleaner first are published by CleverFiles itself or by Handy Recovery, a CleverFiles-owned site, and at least two press pieces (Cult of Mac on 2025-07-02 and Fossbytes) are marked as sponsored. CleverFiles' own roundup dated 2026-05-14 still calls the app "100% free", which was true before 3.0 and is not the whole story now.
On Reddit, we found no verified thread when we researched the app on 2026-09-25. One App Store review from 2025-03-05 says it was "recommended as the best cleanup app for iPhone on Reddit".
Who Clever Cleaner suits
Clever Cleaner suits people whose storage problem is repeats: bursts of near-identical photos, similar shots, large videos worth compressing rather than deleting. It is a strong pick if you:
- want duplicates and similar photos grouped for you with a suggested keeper,
- want to compress videos and photos instead of deleting them,
- installed before 3.0, in which case everything is still free,
- use an older iPhone on iOS 16 or 17, or an iPad.
It fits less well if you want no subscription screen at all, if a privacy label with tracking identifiers bothers you, if you prefer to decide every photo yourself without AI pre-selection, or if you want to watch videos while sorting. Apple's free Duplicates album, under Utilities in the Photos app, also merges exact copies with no daily cap (Apple guide).
How it compares
Against swipe-only cleaners, Clever Cleaner is the broader app, and its free Swipe mode is a genuine free option. Pixtide, the app this team makes, is a free swipe cleaner for photos and videos with no in-app purchases, no daily cap, no AI selection and a privacy label of Data Not Linked to You only; it adds a Decide Later queue, video playback with a scrub bar and undo across the whole session. It does not find duplicates or compress anything, shows only the representative photo of a burst, runs on iPhone only with iOS 18.0 or later, and launched in 2026, so it is much newer and has a handful of ratings. The side-by-side is in Pixtide vs Clever Cleaner, and other options are in Clever Cleaner alternatives.
How we reviewed it
This review is desk research, dated and sourced, not a lab test. On 2026-09-25 we read the US and UK App Store listings, the in-app purchase list, the version history and the privacy label, plus the CleverFiles product page and its roundup. We read 965 unique US App Store reviews across both sort orders and counted the themes, and we checked the US rating count again through Apple's lookup data on 2026-09-29.
We did not measure duplicate accuracy or storage freed ourselves, so the review themes above are reviewers' reports, not our results. Prices and limits change: Clever Cleaner moved from fully free to freemium in a single update, so check the App Store before you rely on any figure here.
