Before either app, remember that the Photos app already includes free cleanup tools: the Recently Deleted album (30 days of recovery), the Duplicates album, and the Media Types albums under the Albums tab. Both apps sit on top of those as a faster, manual swipe layer.

The short version

Both apps are manual swipe cleaners. Neither uses AI to pick which photos to delete, and both move deleted photos to Recently Deleted, so a mis-swipe is never final.

They differ on the business model and on what sits between a swipe and a deletion. Swipe Delete is free with ads, sells ad removal as an in-app purchase, and offers an instant undo, a favourite action and a review screen. Pixtide is free with no ads and nothing to buy, adds a swipe-down Decide Later queue, and shows a review grid of everything you marked before you confirm. Swipe Delete launched on 2024-02-07, has 1,007 ratings on the US App Store and runs on iPhones and iPads back to iOS 15. Pixtide launched on 2026-03-11, needs iOS 18 and was last updated to 1.3.0 on 2026-09-17.

Every Swipe Delete figure comes from its App Store page and its reviews, checked on 2026-09-25. Prices and versions change, so treat them as a snapshot and confirm on the App Store.

Price and ads

Swipe Delete is free to download and use, and it pays for that with ads. Its listing sells eight ways to remove them: Remove Ads Weekly at $4.99, one month at $1.99, a year at $4.99 or $9.99, forever at $9.99, $12.99 or $14.99, and Remove Ads Forever at $39.99, checked on the App Store on 2026-09-25. The listing does not say which of these renew. Ads are the most frequent complaint in its reviews, 13 of the 30 written reviews we could read, and most are about an ad shown when you delete. "STOP GIVING AN ADD TO DELETE ONE FREAKING PHOTO," wrote a 2-star reviewer on 2026-02-26. On 2024-07-30 the developer replied: "We now show ads only when deleting more than a few photos." That is a fair improvement, but the trade is still there: watch ads or pay.

Pixtide is free with no ads at any point and no in-app purchases. There is no premium tier and no swipe cap, so a long Saturday cleanup never hits a wall. If the lack of a paywall is your main reason for looking, the free swipe photo cleaner with no subscription page goes deeper on that angle.

Tracking and privacy

This is the difference that is easiest to miss and easiest to verify. Every app's privacy label is on its App Store page. Swipe Delete's label, checked on 2026-09-25, lists Identifiers under Data Used to Track You, plus user ID, device ID, product interaction, usage and diagnostics data for third-party advertising and analytics. Its privacy policy names AdMob, Google Analytics for Firebase and Crashlytics. That is the normal footprint of an app that shows ads, because ad networks need an identifier to work.

Pixtide's label lists anonymous usage data, coarse location derived from the network, a random install identifier and crash data, all not linked to you and not used for tracking. There is no account, no ad network, and no photo ever leaves your phone. You can also switch the usage data off in Settings. The privacy policy spells out exactly what is and is not collected, and are photo cleaner apps safe? explains how to read any cleaner's label.

Safety: what sits between a swipe and a deletion

Both apps end in the same place. Deleted photos go to the iPhone's Recently Deleted album and stay recoverable for 30 days, because both use Apple's Photos library to delete, as Apple Support explains. The difference is what happens before that.

Swipe Delete offers an instant undo and, since version 1.3.4 (July 2024), a review screen with Keeping, Deleting and All tabs before the batch is deleted. Its listing does not say how far back the undo reaches. Pixtide works like this:

  1. Swiping only marks. Nothing is removed while you sort.
  2. A review grid shows every photo you marked, so you can rescue anything you swiped too fast, however long ago in the session.
  3. Confirmed deletes go to Recently Deleted, recoverable for 30 days.

To undo a deletion in either app, open Photos, go to Recently Deleted and tap Recover, following Apple's steps for deleted photos.

Whichever app you use, emptying Recently Deleted is what actually frees the storage. Until then the space is still in use, which is why a cleanup can look like it did nothing to the storage bar at first.

Video

Swipe Delete is photo-first. Reviewers mention videos going through without trouble, but its listing does not mention playback controls or a scrub bar. Pixtide plays videos inline with a scrub bar and, since version 1.3, with sound if you tap the speaker, so you can check a long clip's middle and ending before deciding.

Organization and momentum

Swipe Delete works month by month, shows your progress per month and lets you favourite a photo while you swipe, which is the right basic loop. Pixtide adds a whole-year mode, categories that mirror Apple's media types (screenshots, videos, selfies, Live Photos, panoramas, favourites, bursts), a recents deck, and On This Day, which surfaces photos taken on today's date in past years. It also keeps a light layer of motivation: streaks, milestones, levels from Photo Rookie to Storage Guru, storage goals, and a result card you can share after a cleanup.

Updates and reliability

Swipe Delete 1.3.14 arrived on 2026-09-24, its first update since 1.3.12 on 2025-01-20, a gap of 20 months, checked on the App Store on 2026-09-25. Its release note reads "Fixed issue that sometimes made Delete Photos button not work", and the update before it also fixed the Delete button. Reviews echo this: 2 of the 30 written reviews we read say deleting did not work or freed no storage, and 4 describe slow loading or lag. Deleting a little at a time also costs time when ads sit in between: "Only took 1 photo per month and want to clean 4 months? 2 minutes to delete 4 photos," wrote a 1-star reviewer on 2024-08-31. Pixtide launched on 2026-03-11 and shipped 1.3.0 on 2026-09-17, but it is new, so it has far fewer reviews to judge it by.

Where Swipe Delete wins

Swipe Delete is the better fit in several concrete cases, all checked on the App Store on 2026-09-25:

  • Track record: 4.50 from 1,007 US ratings and 4.58 from 319 UK ratings, on the store since 2024-02-07. Pixtide has a handful.
  • Older devices and iPad: iOS 15.0 or later on iPhone and iPad. Pixtide needs iOS 18 on an iPhone.
  • Android: a Google Play version with 100K+ downloads and a 4.2 rating. Pixtide is iPhone only.
  • Light theme: Swipe Delete has light and dark modes; Pixtide 1.3.0 is dark only.
  • Photo details: file size and metadata in a detail view, plus a favourite action while swiping. Pixtide keeps details behind a long press.

Reviewers like the free core too: "for a free app and no subscription needed this app gets 5 stars," wrote a 5-star reviewer on 2025-04-05. If any of those matter to you, Swipe Delete is the better fit today.

One honest limitation

Pixtide does not detect duplicates. Swipe Delete's website mentions removing duplicate or blurry images, but its App Store listing describes no detection feature, so for exact copies use Apple's free Duplicates album in Photos. Pixtide also shows only the representative photo of a burst, and deleting it removes the representative only, so prune individual frames in the Photos app until full burst handling ships. Pixtide is iPhone only and needs iOS 18.0 or later.

Which should you choose?

Choose Pixtide if you want the swipe flow with no ads, no tracking, a review screen before anything is deleted, a Decide Later pile, proper video playback and more ways to slice your library. Choose Swipe Delete if you are on an older iPhone or an iPad, also use Android, want a light theme, or would rather go with the app that has the longer track record. Both are free to try, and both leave your photos in Recently Deleted for 30 days if you change your mind.
