Pixtide is a free iPhone swipe photo cleaner that keeps the right-to-keep, left-to-delete flow of SwipePhotos: Photo Cleaner without a purchase. SwipePhotos has no free tier: sorting and deleting need a plan, from $7.99 a week, $9.99 a month or $29.99 lifetime in the US, checked on the App Store on 2026-09-25. SwipePhotos runs on iPhone, iPad and Mac; Pixtide is iPhone only and needs iOS 18.0 or later.

SwipePhotos in September 2026: the short version

SwipePhotos: Photo Cleaner is a paid swipe photo cleaner for iPhone, iPad and Mac by Jan Philip Wahle, a developer in Germany. It launched on 2026-05-13, has shipped about 30 releases in four months, and version 3.13 arrived on 2026-09-16. The App Store listing uses the subtitle "Delete duplicates, free space" and needs iOS 18.0, iPadOS 18.0 or macOS 15.0, with one purchase covering all three. The app is 48.8 MB and available in 14 languages.

The pitch is "Swipe right to keep, left to delete, tap the heart to favorite", with month-by-month decks, a Smart Stack for similar shots, a review step before anything is deleted and a native Mac app. It is carefully built. The one thing it is not is free: early versions offered 10 free swipes a day, then a free first month of sorting, and today both sorting and deleting sit behind a purchase.

Verdict: if you sort on a Mac or iPad, or want duplicate stacks, SwipePhotos is worth paying for. If you want a swipe cleaner on your iPhone with nothing to buy, Pixtide is the free swap.

Why people look for a SwipePhotos alternative

The main reason to look past SwipePhotos is price: the app has no free tier, and its cheapest recurring plan bills weekly. The listing puts it plainly: "SwipePhotos is a paid app: sorting and deleting need a purchase."

That surprised at least one buyer. SwipePhotos has five written reviews on the German App Store, four of them 5-star. The one 1-star review, dated 2026-08-13 on version 3.6, is titled "Nicht kostenfrei" and reads: "Entgegen der Darstellung im AppStore kann man zwar Duplikate finden, aber nicht ohne Abo löschen." In English (our translation): "Not free. Contrary to how it is presented in the App Store, you can find duplicates, but you cannot delete them without a subscription."

The weekly plan is the other sticking point. SwipePhotos' own comparison with Swipewipe says "the SwipePhotos week went from $3.99 to $7.99 in August 2026", and adds that five weeks of it cost more than the $34.99 year. That is a fair point to make, and it is also the reason a free option is worth a look.

What SwipePhotos costs over a year

The cheapest way to use SwipePhotos for a year is a yearly or lifetime purchase, and the weekly plan is by far the most expensive. At the US prices checked on the App Store on 2026-09-25, the weekly plan at $7.99 comes to $415.48 over 52 weeks if it keeps renewing. The monthly plan at $9.99 comes to $119.88 over 12 months. The yearly plans are listed at $34.99, $39.99 and $79.99, and the lifetime purchases at $29.99 and $69.99, with a "Lifetime 50% Off" offer at $39.99.

There is also a $0.99 Streak Repair purchase for a broken streak. UK prices follow the same pattern: £7.29 a week, £9.19 a month, £31.99 to £72.99 a year and £27.49 to £63.99 lifetime.

If you do buy SwipePhotos, the lifetime option usually makes the most sense. If you only sort on an iPhone and do not want to pay at all, that is the gap Pixtide fills. Our guide to which photo cleaner apps are free lists what else costs nothing.

Privacy label and tracking

SwipePhotos keeps your photos on your device, but its App Store privacy label declares data used to track you. Both apps say photos are not uploaded: SwipePhotos calls itself "Private by design", and Pixtide works entirely on the phone with no account. The difference is in what happens around the photos.

The SwipePhotos label, checked on 2026-09-25, lists Purchases, Identifiers and Usage Data under Data Used to Track You, and Device ID for third-party advertising. Its privacy policy names the TikTok App Events SDK, AppsFlyer, Firebase Analytics, PostHog, RevenueCat and Google Ads click IDs, and since version 3.9 the app shows Apple's tracking prompt "before measuring how our ads perform". That is ad measurement for the developer's own marketing, not ads shown inside the app, and SwipePhotos is open about it.

Pixtide's label has no Data Used to Track You section, checked on 2026-09-25. To be equally open: Pixtide sends anonymous usage statistics through PostHog too, and you can switch them off in Settings.

Where SwipePhotos wins

SwipePhotos does several things Pixtide does not, and the Mac app is the biggest. You can sort on a laptop screen with keyboard shortcuts (Y, X, C, F, the arrow keys and Cmd-Z), with Live Photos playing on hover. A German reviewer titled a 5-star review on 2026-07-26 "Sehr gute App zum Fotos sortieren aufm Mac", which in our translation reads "Very good app for sorting photos on the Mac".

The other wins:

  • iCloud sync of decisions since version 3.11, so a deck started on the iPhone continues on the Mac.
  • Smart Stack groups bursts and near-duplicates in a grid with a suggested keeper highlighted, and separate Duplicates and Screenshots hubs.
  • iPad support and 14 languages, against Pixtide's iPhone-only, English listing.
  • Pinch to zoom, a heart for favourites, album-scoped sessions and looping video previews in Smart Stack.
  • Extras such as Camera Roll Wrapped and 17 trophies.

Reviewers like how it feels. One 5-star review from 2026-05-20 calls it "clean and intuitive Design and the best of its kind in my opinion". If these features matter to you and the price does not, SwipePhotos is a sound choice.

What Pixtide does differently

Pixtide is built around one idea: the full swipe cleaner, free, on your iPhone, with nothing to unlock. There is no trial, no plan and no swipe cap.

Three things work differently in the swipe itself. Swipe down sends a photo to a Decide Later queue, so you do not have to choose on the spot; SwipePhotos' listing does not mention an equivalent. The Undo button under the card steps back through your whole session, not only the last swipe. And videos play inline with sound and a scrub bar, so you can check the middle of a long clip before you decide.

Deletion is deliberately slow. A left swipe only marks a photo, and a review screen shows everything marked before you confirm. Confirmed deletes go through Apple's PhotoKit to the Recently Deleted album, where Apple keeps them for 30 days, as described in Apple's guide to deleting and recovering photos. You can sort by month, year, category (screenshots, videos, selfies, Live Photos and more), recent shots or On This Day, and your progress is saved.

One honest limitation

Pixtide does not detect duplicates or similar shots, which is exactly where SwipePhotos' Smart Stack is strongest. For exact duplicates, Apple's own Duplicates album in the Photos app finds and merges them for free, so use that alongside Pixtide.

A few more limits to know before you switch:

  • Bursts: Pixtide shows the representative photo of a burst only, and deleting it removes that representative. To prune frames inside a burst, use the Photos app.
  • iPhone only: there is no iPad or Mac app and no sync between devices.
  • iOS 18.0 or later: older iPhones cannot install it.

If you rely on the Mac app or the iCloud sync, keep SwipePhotos. Pixtide is the better fit when the iPhone is where you sort and cost is the reason you are looking.

Other ways to replace SwipePhotos

The cheapest replacement for SwipePhotos is the one already on your iPhone. Apple's Photos app can delete many photos at once, and it keeps anything you remove in Recently Deleted for 30 days; the steps are in Apple's iPhone User Guide. The Duplicates album and the Media Types albums (Screenshots, Videos, Bursts) are good places to start. What the Photos app does not make quick is one-at-a-time keep-or-delete decisions across thousands of shots, which is the job of a swipe app.
