iPhone Storage Almost Full? Delete Photos Fast, in the Right Order

The quickest way to fix "iPhone storage almost full" is, in order: check Settings, General, iPhone Storage (1 minute); empty Recently Deleted, which frees space at once (1 minute); turn on Optimize iPhone Storage (30 seconds); delete your largest videos (10 minutes); merge the Duplicates album (5 minutes); then swipe through the rest. Deleted photos otherwise stay on the phone for 30 days (Apple Support).

This guide is written by the Pixtide team (we make Pixtide, one of the apps named below). We say where another app or Apple's own tool is the better pick. The times above are our estimates for a typical library, not a benchmark.

The fast order, step by step

Speed comes from doing the steps that free the most space per minute first. Each step below uses a free Apple tool, and the order matters more than the tools themselves:

  1. Check iPhone Storage (1 minute). Open Settings, General, iPhone Storage and wait for the bar to fill in. If Photos is not near the top of the list, photos are not your problem, and apps or Messages are. Note the free space so you can compare at the end.
  2. Empty Recently Deleted (1 minute). In Photos, go to Utilities, open Recently Deleted, unlock it with Face ID, tap Select and Delete All. This is the only step that returns space the moment you tap. Details in how to empty Recently Deleted on iPhone.
  3. Turn on Optimize iPhone Storage (30 seconds). Settings, your name, iCloud, Photos. Only useful if you have iCloud Photos and room in iCloud.
  4. Delete the largest videos (about 10 minutes). See the next section.
  5. Merge duplicates (about 5 minutes). Photos, Utilities, Duplicates, then tap Merge on each set.
  6. Swipe through the rest (15 to 30 minutes a session). The ordinary photos only you can judge.

Why the warning appears

The "Storage Almost Full" warning appears when free space on the iPhone runs low, and for most people photos and videos are the largest single category in iPhone Storage. Nothing in iOS asks you to decide about a photo when you take it: every screenshot, burst, forwarded image and ten-second clip is kept by default, and iCloud Photos without Optimize keeps every original on the phone.

Videos are the usual culprit. A few long clips can take more space than a whole year of photos, which is why step 4 comes before any photo-by-photo work. Our anonymous usage statistics show the scale: people using Pixtide freed 2.7 TB across 576 people between March and 2026-09-19, about 4.7 GB per person, from 418,395 photos and videos reviewed. That averages roughly 6.5 MB per item, well above a typical photo, because the videos pull the average up.

If Photos is small in iPhone Storage and the warning persists, look at Messages attachments, streaming downloads and System Data before deleting any pictures.

Largest videos and duplicates first

The biggest gains per minute come from videos, then duplicates, because both can be found without judging photos one at a time. In Photos, open Media Types, Videos and start with long clips and screen recordings. Photos sorts that album by date, not size, so scan for long running times. If iPhone Storage shows a recommendation for your videos, tap it to review the clips you can delete. Our guide to deleting large videos on iPhone covers every place big videos hide, including Messages.

Duplicates come next. Apple added the Duplicates album to Photos in iOS 16 in 2022, and it finds duplicate photos and videos in your library. Merging keeps the best version with the combined metadata and moves the extras to Recently Deleted. It takes a few taps per set.

To select many photos at once anywhere in Photos, tap Select and drag a finger across rows, as Apple's guide to deleting or hiding photos and videos shows. iOS publishes no cap on how many you can select at once; more in how many photos you can delete at once.

What frees space now and what takes 30 days

Deleting a photo on iPhone does not free space immediately: iOS moves it to Recently Deleted and keeps it there for 30 days, and only emptying that album, or waiting out the 30 days, returns the space. This is the single most common reason people delete thousands of photos and see no change. One reviewer of Photo Cleaner® by Lumi Software described the effect: "The app says i've earned 16gb but it doesn't show in the settings app" (2 stars, 2026-07-27). Whatever tool you use, the storage figure stays the same until Recently Deleted is empty.

ActionWhen the space comes back
Delete a photo or video in Photos or any cleaner appAfter 30 days, or when you empty Recently Deleted
Empty Recently DeletedImmediately
Turn on Optimize iPhone StorageGradually, as iOS swaps originals for smaller copies
Offload an unused appImmediately

Emptying Recently Deleted is permanent, so glance through it first. If you delete something by mistake before emptying, recovering photos deleted by an app takes seconds.

Faster options with apps

Once videos and duplicates are gone, the rest is a keep-or-delete decision on each photo, and that is where an app is faster than the grid. These options do different jobs; prices and counts were checked on the App Store on 2026-09-25:

Clever Cleaner by CleverFiles is the stronger pick for similar photos that Apple's album misses, rated 4.8 from 82,579 US ratings (checked on the App Store on 2026-09-25). Its Swipe mode is unlimited; since 3.0 its other tools have daily limits for new users, which surprised some: "it's $6.99 a week or $39.99 for a lifetime. Where's the free Clever Cleaner??!!" (1 star, 2026-09-01). Its Best Shot feature pre-selects photos, so check the selection before confirming. App Store listing. A full comparison is in Pixtide vs Clever Cleaner.

Pixtide covers step 6: swipe right to keep, left to delete, down to decide later, with no swipe limit and no ads. It does not find duplicates, so pair it with the Duplicates album or Clever Cleaner. Swipe apps can move quickly: one Swipewipe reviewer reported "15 GB free in less than 1 and a half hours" (5 stars, 2026-09-15).

The manual pass, without rushing

The manual pass is where most of the remaining space sits, and it goes faster in short sessions than in one marathon. At 2 to 4 seconds per photo, 1,000 photos take roughly 35 to 70 minutes. Start with the months that hold the most clutter, usually holidays and events, where one moment was shot twenty times.

In Pixtide you can sort by month, year, category (screenshots, videos, selfies, Live Photos and more) or your most recent shots, and videos play inline with sound so you can check a clip before it goes. Unsure photos go down into Decide Later instead of slowing you down. Swiping only marks a photo: a review screen shows everything marked before you confirm, and confirmed deletes go to Recently Deleted like any other deletion.

Common mistakes when storage is full

Three mistakes waste most of the time people spend on a full iPhone, and each has a quick fix.

Not emptying Recently Deleted. The space stays taken for 30 days. Empty the album the same day, after a quick look.

Deleting from iCloud by accident. With iCloud Photos on, a delete on the iPhone deletes the photo from iCloud and every device, as Apple's support page explains. If you only wanted space, Optimize iPhone Storage was the right tool; see deleting photos while keeping them in iCloud.

Sorting photos while videos hold the space. Five old clips can free more than 500 blurry photos. Check the Videos album before a long photo session.

Frequently asked questions

My iPhone says storage almost full but I deleted everything, why?

Deleted photos and videos move to the Recently Deleted album and keep using space for 30 days. Open Photos, go to Utilities, unlock Recently Deleted with Face ID and choose Delete All to get the space back now. If the warning stays, open Settings, General, iPhone Storage: apps, Messages attachments or System Data may be the real cause rather than Photos.

What happens to photos deleted by a photo cleaner app?

On iPhone, a cleaner app deletes through Apple's Photos framework, so iOS asks you to confirm and the photos move to Recently Deleted, where they stay for 30 days and can be recovered. Pixtide works this way: swiping only marks a photo, a review screen shows every marked item, and confirmed deletes go to Recently Deleted. Space returns once that album is emptied.

What is the quickest way to delete old photos on iPhone?

For raw speed, open an album in Photos, tap Select and drag a finger across the rows to pick hundreds at once, then empty Recently Deleted. Do the largest videos first, because one long clip can outweigh hundreds of photos. For photos that need a decision each, a swipe app such as Pixtide, which is free with no swipe limit, is faster than the grid.

How do I free up iPhone storage without deleting photos?

Turn on Optimize iPhone Storage under Settings, your name, iCloud, Photos. Full-resolution originals stay in iCloud and the iPhone keeps smaller copies, replacing originals as the phone needs space, so the gain comes over time rather than instantly. It needs iCloud Photos and enough iCloud storage for the whole library. Offloading unused apps in iPhone Storage also frees space without touching a photo.

Does deleting photos from my iPhone delete them from iCloud?

Yes, if iCloud Photos is on. The iPhone, iPad, Mac and iCloud.com share one library, so a photo deleted on the iPhone is deleted everywhere and moves to Recently Deleted for 30 days, as Apple's support page explains. To keep a copy in iCloud and free space on the phone, use Optimize iPhone Storage instead of deleting.
