Cleaner Guru: Clean Up Storage is a legitimate iPhone cleaner app from GM UniverseApps Limited in Cyprus, rated 4.52 from 148,534 US ratings, checked on the App Store on 2026-09-29. Photos it deletes go to Apple's Recently Deleted album for 30 days, so a mistake can be undone. The concerns reviewers raise are about billing: 22 of the 50 most recent written reviews mention charges, and the privacy label declares tracking although the description says "No tracking."

Who makes Cleaner Guru, and the look-alike

Cleaner Guru is a real, long-running app: GM UniverseApps Limited, registered at 26 Stavrou Street in Strovolos, Nicosia, has published it since 2019-11-06 and also makes ScanGuru, Translator Guru and several other utilities. The listing gives support@guruapps.tech as the contact, and the studio's site is gmuniverseapps.limited. CleverFiles ranked it second in its best iPhone storage cleaner roundup (updated 2026-05-14) and second again in its duplicate photo apps list (2026-08-17). One naming trap: "Free Cleaner Guru" by TERMUX LLC (App Store id 6756351762, launched 2025-12-28, 1,564 US ratings) is a separate app from a different developer, with swipe gestures in its listing. Before judging reviews or a charge, check that the developer reads GM UniverseApps Limited.

Deleting photos and getting them back

Cleaner Guru cannot erase a photo permanently on its own, because iOS routes every app's photo deletions through Apple's Photos library. Confirmed deletions go to Recently Deleted for 30 days (Apple Support: delete photos on iPhone). To restore them, open Photos, scroll to Utilities, tap Recently Deleted, unlock with Face ID, select the items and tap Recover (Apple's guide to deleting or hiding photos). The listing promises that "nothing is deleted without your explicit approval", but its AI "marks the best shot" among similar photos, so read the selection before you tap delete. The 30-day safety net covers photos and videos only. Contacts and Gmail messages the app removes follow their own services' rules; two June 2026 reviewers reported losing contacts and a sent email. Our guide to recovering photos deleted by an app has the full steps.

The privacy label next to the listing's words

Cleaner Guru's description and its App Store privacy label, both read on 2026-09-29, describe tracking differently. The description says: "Cleaner Guru works completely offline" and "No tracking. No uploads. Your privacy is fully protected." The label, which the developer fills in for Apple, lists Purchases, Identifiers and Usage Data under "Data Used to Track You". In Apple's terms, tracking means linking data from the app with other companies' data for advertising or measurement. Under "Data Linked to You", the App Functionality line includes email address, contacts, emails or text messages, and photos or videos; the label does not say which feature each item serves, and it does not state that photos are uploaded. The privacy policy (effective 16 December 2025) names 15 partners, including Google, TikTok and IronSource, the last "to support in-app advertising". None of the 50 recent reviews complained about in-app ads. Its change log says an Email Auto Clean feature added on 2026-07-27 stores connection data on the company's servers.

Free download, paid deletes: the prices

Cleaner Guru is free to download and to scan, and recent reviewers say the delete step is where the paywall sits. The US App Store page lists ten in-app purchase items, "Premium" and "Unlimited Access", priced from $4.99 to $39.99, checked on the App Store on 2026-09-29; the list does not show how long each plan lasts. The developer's subscription terms allow "a free or a paid trial" and renewal "each week, month, 6 months, year". Reviewers between June and August 2026 name weekly charges of $7.99, $8.99 and $9.99. In the 50 most recent written reviews, 14 mention that the app is not free or that deleting needs a payment. Before subscribing, read the renewal period on Apple's payment sheet. Our guide to which photo cleaner apps are free compares free tiers across the category.

How to cancel a Cleaner Guru subscription

Deleting Cleaner Guru from your iPhone does not cancel the subscription; Apple keeps billing until you cancel it in Settings. Some recent reviewers only noticed weekly charges months later, so check your subscriptions even if the app is gone. The steps, from Apple's cancellation guide:

  1. Open the Settings app and tap your name at the top.
  2. Tap Subscriptions.
  3. Tap Cleaner Guru. If you do not see it, check that you are signed in with the Apple Account that paid.
  4. Tap Cancel Subscription, then confirm.

Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date shown on that screen, or the next period may still be charged. Apple notes that if there is no Cancel button, or the screen shows an expiration message in red, the subscription is already cancelled. If you bought through Cleaner Guru's external web link rather than the App Store, the plan is not in Apple's list: contact the developer at support@guruapps.tech instead.

How to request a refund from Apple

Refunds for App Store subscriptions are decided by Apple; the developer's older replies on the listing say "All payments are made by Apple". Follow Apple's refund guide:

  1. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in with your Apple Account.
  2. Tap "I'd like to", then choose "Request a refund".
  3. Pick the reason, such as an unintended subscription renewal, then tap Next.
  4. Select the Cleaner Guru charge or charges and tap Submit.

Apple says to wait 24 to 48 hours for an update, and the status can be checked on the same site and select every weekly payment you dispute. Apple does not grant every request, and one reviewer wrote that repeated requests were refused. Purchases made through the developer's web link fall under Cleaner Guru's own terms, which call them "non-refundable" unless the law says otherwise.

What recent reviews say

The 4.52 average and the recent written reviews tell different stories. The 50 most recent written US reviews, from 2026-06-07 to 2026-09-26 and read on 2026-09-29, average 2.20 stars: 33 one-star and 13 five-star. June 2026, on version 3.5.4, was the weakest month at 1.75. The one-star theme is billing:

  • "They advertise 39.99 a year and then sneakily start charging you 7.99 a week." (1 star, 2026-07-13)
  • "each request was denied without a specific explanation" (1 star, 2026-08-10, about refund requests)

Other one-star reviews describe trials billed at once and weekly charges running for months unnoticed. Five-star reviews are short and praise the duplicate finder:

  • "This app made it incredibly easy." (5 stars, 2026-08-23)

JustUseApp, which ranks high for this question, shows a "Safety Score: 8/100". That figure is generated automatically from review text; it is not a security audit, and we do not treat it as evidence either way.

Where Cleaner Guru wins

Cleaner Guru does far more than photos. Its AI groups duplicate and similar photos and pre-selects the best shot, which clears a big library of near-copies quickly: one five-star reviewer reported 11,000 photos cleared in 2 hours (2024-08-27). Beyond photos, it cleans a Gmail inbox with bulk delete and unsubscribe, compresses videos, merges duplicate contacts and offers a password-protected secret folder and storage widgets. CleverFiles also describes a swipe mode for reviewing the library, though the App Store listing does not mention it. Cleaner Guru runs on iOS 16.0 or later, so it suits older iPhones, and it is available in 17 languages. Its 148,534 US ratings and two second-place slots in the CleverFiles roundups give it a track record that newer apps do not have. For one app covering photos, contacts and email, on a plan whose renewal period you have checked, it covers more ground than a swipe-only tool.

How it compares

Pixtide is a free swipe photo cleaner for iPhone that works only on photos and videos: no email, no contacts, no compression and no duplicate finder. It has no ads, no subscription and no in-app purchases, so there is nothing to cancel or refund. Its App Store privacy label has no "Data Used to Track You" section; anonymous usage statistics are declared as not linked to you and can be switched off in Settings. You decide every photo with a swipe and review the marked ones before confirming. Its limits: it launched in 2026 with a handful of ratings, needs iOS 18 or later and runs on iPhone only. For duplicates, Apple's free Duplicates album in Photos, under Utilities, or a dedicated tool such as Clever Cleaner (see our Clever Cleaner alternative page) will do more.
