What Unroller is

Unroller is a swipe-to-delete photo cleaner for iPhone that sorts a camera roll one photo or video at a time: right keeps, left marks for deletion. Its full App Store name is Swipe Photo Cleaner: Unroller, and it is published by Mohamed Makled, a solo developer with one app on the store. It launched on 2025-01-03 and has carried several names since, including "Unroller: Photo Cleaner" in February 2025 and "Swipe Delete Photos - Unroller" from April to June 2025, so older links and Reddit threads may use a different title.

The Unroller App Store listing sums it up as "Swipe right to keep. Swipe left to delete. That's it." Decks can be built by month, album, category, file size or at random, a Finish button jumps to a review screen before anything is deleted, and live stats show photos cleaned, storage freed and the share of the library sorted. Since April 2025 a Tools tab adds a Duplicate Finder, a Video Compressor, an Album Cleaner, a PDF Creator and a Secret Safe. Version 4.10.0 shipped on 2026-09-28; the app is 45.8 MB and needs iOS 17.0 or later.

Unroller and Pixtide compared

Unroller and Pixtide share the core swipe, the review step before deletion and on-device photo processing, and differ on price, the privacy label, languages and extra tools. Unroller figures come from its App Store listing, privacy label and policy, checked on the App Store on 2026-09-29.

Where Unroller wins

Unroller is ahead of Pixtide on reach, tools and pace, and those gaps are real rather than cosmetic.

  • Languages. Unroller is available in 23 languages, from Arabic and Hindi to Japanese and Ukrainian. The live Pixtide app is in English; version 1.4, which adds 11 more languages, was in App Store review on 2026-09-29.
  • Tools beyond swiping. The Duplicate Finder, Video Compressor, Album Cleaner, PDF Creator and Secret Safe have no counterpart in Pixtide. Reviews of the duplicate finder are mixed, but it exists.
  • Update cadence. Unroller shipped 25 releases between 2025-08-27 and 2026-09-28, roughly one every one to three weeks.
  • Older iPhones and Macs. It runs on iOS 17.0 and on Apple silicon Macs; Pixtide needs iOS 18.0 and is iPhone only.
  • Ratings and a listening developer. It holds 4.70 from 176 US ratings and 4.60 from 102 German ratings, and 47 of the 48 reviews we read on the App Store web pages carry a developer reply.

Reviewers say it plainly: "I could review an entire month of photos (~100-150) in about 5 minutes" (5 stars, Netherlands, 2026-07-03), and "the creator of this app is really responsive" (5 stars, Netherlands, 2025-12-01).

Unroller's price: free to start, five purchases

Unroller is free to download and freemium to use: its App Store page lists five in-app purchases, checked on the App Store on 2026-09-29. In the US they are a Weekly Plan at $6.99, Unroller Premium Monthly at $9.99, Unroller Premium Annual at $39.99, Lifetime Premium at $44.99 and Unroller Premium Lifetime at $79.99. The UK store lists the same tiers from £6.99 to £79.99.

The free tier is described only as "Try it free" on the listing and "Free to start" on the developer's site, and the listing does not state its limits. The description also promotes "a Lifetime purchase no recurring fees", while weekly, monthly and annual subscriptions sit in the same purchase list, so read the purchase screen before you tap.

Some people remember Unroller as free because the developer ran 48-hour giveaways of lifetime access on Reddit in 2025, for example in June 2025 and October 2025. Those posts quoted a normal lifetime price of $44.99 and later $29.99. Pixtide has no purchases at all; our guide to which photo cleaner apps are free lists what the others charge.

What reviewers report about deleting

Two Unroller reviews from 2026 report that deleting the photos you marked required Premium, which would mean the free tier lets you sort but not finish. We have not confirmed this on a device, and the listing does not describe where the free tier ends, so treat it as a reported change rather than a stated rule.

The first report is a German one-star review from 2026-03-14, titled in German to the effect of "free version useless", which says deleting the selected photos turned out to be a paid function at the end. The second is a US two-star review titled "Used to be good" from 2026-08-08: "Now, to even delete phones you have to pay?" (2 stars, US, 2026-08-08). Together they are two of the ten written reviews we found since March 2026.

Reviews from early 2025 describe a free tier that was enough for them. If you already use Unroller for free and it still deletes for you, nothing on this page is a reason to switch. If you hit a paywall at the review screen, Pixtide never charges to delete, and our guide to a photo cleaner with no swipe limit compares the others.

Unroller's privacy label and policy

Unroller keeps your photos on the phone: its privacy policy, last updated 2026-09-02, says photos are processed on the device and never uploaded, and the app shows no ads. Deletions go through Apple Photos, so nothing is erased on the spot.

The data around the photos is a different story. Unroller's App Store privacy label, checked on 2026-09-29, lists Data Used to Track You (Identifiers, Usage Data) and Data Linked to You (Purchases, Identifiers, Usage Data). The policy names Amplitude analytics, which can be switched off under Legal in Settings, RevenueCat for purchases, Apple Search Ads attribution, and the Meta SDK for "advertising measurement" after you grant tracking permission. In a June 2025 Reddit post the developer wrote that "absolutely zero data is collected"; the label has changed since, and we do not know when.

Pixtide's App Store label lists Data Not Linked to You only, anonymous usage statistics that you can turn off in Settings, with nothing used to track you. For how to read any cleaner's label, see are photo cleaner apps safe.

What Pixtide does instead

Pixtide is a free iPhone photo cleaner with the same swipe idea and nothing to buy: no subscription, no weekly plan, no lifetime unlock, no swipe cap and no delete cap. Right keeps a photo, left marks it for deletion, and down sends it to a Decide Later queue for the shots you cannot call yet.

A swipe only marks a photo. At the end of a session, a review screen shows every marked photo and video, and you can rescue any of them before you confirm. The Undo button under the card walks back through the entire session, not just the last swipe. Videos play inline with sound, so you can check a clip before you drop it.

You can sort by month, by year, by category (screenshots, videos, selfies, Live Photos, panoramas, favourites, bursts), by recent photos or through On This Day. Pixtide uses no AI: nothing is scanned, scored or pre-selected. Stats for storage freed and photos reviewed, streaks, milestones, storage goals and smart reminders capped at one a day are there if you like a nudge. Everything runs on the phone with no account, and Pixtide is made by Feral Online, an independent developer.

Deleting safely with either app

Unroller and Pixtide both delete through Apple's Photos framework, so a confirmed delete from either app moves the item to the Recently Deleted album, where it stays for 30 days before iOS removes it for good. Apple describes how to recover or permanently remove those items in its guide to deleting and recovering photos and in the iPhone User Guide page on deleting or hiding photos and videos.

That window matters if you switch apps halfway through a cleanup. Finish the review in the app you are leaving first, so no marked photos are left waiting, then look through Recently Deleted once before you start again in another app. Clearing that album is what frees the storage, so do it only after you are sure. If something disappears that you wanted, our guide on how to recover photos deleted by an app walks through the steps.

One honest limitation

Pixtide is not a like-for-like replacement for Unroller's Tools tab. It does not detect duplicates or similar photos, compress videos, hide photos in a safe or build PDFs; Apple's Duplicates album in the Photos app finds exact copies for free, and the other jobs need other apps. For burst photos, Pixtide shows only the representative photo, and deleting it removes that photo only, so individual burst frames still get pruned in Apple Photos.

Pixtide is iPhone only and needs iOS 18.0 or later, so an iPhone that stops at iOS 17 cannot run it, and there is no Mac version. The live app is in English, against Unroller's 23 languages. And it is new: Pixtide launched on 2026-03-11 with a handful of ratings, against Unroller's 176 US ratings and weekly release rhythm. If duplicates, compression or your own language decide it, those gaps outweigh the price.

Who should pick which

Pick Swipe Photo Cleaner: Unroller if you want a swiper in your own language, a duplicate finder and video compressor in the same app, support for iOS 17 or a Mac, and a developer who ships every few weeks, and you are happy with the free tier as you find it or with paying $39.99 a year or a lifetime price.

Pick Pixtide if you would rather have nothing to buy, a privacy label with no tracking section, a Decide Later pile and a session-wide Undo button, and a delete step that never asks for money. You can also use both: Apple's Duplicates album for exact copies, Pixtide for the keep-or-delete pass.
